Devotional: Supporting Roles "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works in all men." -- 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 BLOCKING How do we move from place to place, be engaging, get focus, give focus,
and not let the story get lost? This is the challenge of staging a performance.
You know. Blocking. Sometimes we can successfully block ourselves. Sometimes
we have to adjust. You know. Cheat. Each is an essential performance skill.
Yet, the most effective productions are when the director combines all
the crew's skills to relate the tale. Do we block ourselves in our relationship with Him? Do we let Him direct, or do we cheat? In doing either, does the Greatest Story we're telling become cloudy - to us? To those who watch us? Stage management is needed to watch when the cheating or blocking pulls focus to the artist, not the author. In performance, the strongest location is considered center stage, and this indeed is where Jesus was blocked for the Resurrection chapter of His Story. The LORD knew its importance in relation to Himself, and to the rest of the cast: each character has a moment that's central because each is connected to the cross: Stage left, stage right, were the thieves: one who accepted, one who mocked. At his feet, downstage, were the soldiers and the mourners. Upstage, God the Father. Who is center stage? In this scenario in our lives. What is your purpose for performing in houses of worship? Does that purpose change when auditioning for a feature film or commercial? Is your witness simply in the words of the script, or in our approach to rehearsal? Our preparation for an audition? Do we pray for the part, or pray for His Direction? The answer is in how we accept that The Father is the Author, follow
Jesus the Lead, take direction from The Spirit, and do what's necessary
to receive a lifetime achievement for a Best Supporting Role. Copyright 2002, Michael Edgar Myers |
